National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) Technical Publications

Defines the DoD World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS 84). It provides the most accurate geodetic and gravitational data and local datum transformation constants and formulas for transforming different datums into WGS 84. An internally documented source code directory is included for system developer use. It allows input from geodetic, Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM), or the Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) coordinates. Over 100 datums are available for transformation to or from WGS 84. Output is automatically presented as geodetic, UTM, and MGRS coordinates. This report is normally used by systems developers and by persons involved in large quantities of datum transformations and coordinate conversions.

Describes the basic principles of the Military Grid Reference System and the non-standard reference systems. It describes the method for determining references on maps and charts at scales of 1:1,000,000 and larger. It contains identifications for the grid zone designations and for the 100,000 meter squares of the Universal Transverse Mercator Grid and the Universal Polar Stereographic Grid. It also contains the specifications and grid identifications for the various non-standard grids. It provides diagrams and textual information for delineating geodetic datums and ellipsoids.

Depicts the preferred grids, datums, and ellipsoids on a world index specified for new map production. Appendix D, 1990 edition, is included in NIMA Technical Manual 8358.1. It is also available for sale as a separate item.

Describes geographic to grid and grid to geographic conversions for the UTM and UPS grids. It also discusses computations for convergence from geographic positions and from grid coordinates for the UTM grid, and convergence in the Polar Stereographic projection. Both mathematical and tabular methods are illustrated for the above items. In addition, datum transformation methods, formulas, and definitions are illustrated.

The CD contains maps depicting the Union and Confederate unit positions and movements during the Antietam battle of the Civil War. It has a current USGS image and a topographic quadrangle of the area, 14 historical maps showing unit positions aover the course of the battle, and two different digital data viewers: ERDAS Imagizer and Mr SID Geoviewer.

Earth-info provides easy Internet access to imagery of the Earth, maps, and other geographic information produced by the U.S. Government and commercial providers. The web site will benefit private citizens, educators, local governments, and public media that require ready access to visual data, maps, and imagery.

The Vmap Level 0 database provides worldwide coverage of vector-based Geospatial data, which can be viewed at the 1:1,000,000 scale. It consists of geographic, attribute, and textual data stored on compact disc read-only memory (CD-ROM). It provides worldwide coverage composed of four regions (sold as a set): Disc 1-North America; Disc 2-Europe and northern Asia: Disc 3-South America, Africa, and Antarctica; and Disc 4-southern Asia and Australia.

Contains World Landmass Geographic Names Data excluding the United States and Antarctica. The prototype contains names that have been approved by the U.S. Board on Geographic Names.

Muse is an assemble of separate geospacial data applications and multi-platform utilities. Software tools are provided to access NIMA digital data, and perform datum transformations and coordinate conversions. It is intended to complement popular geographic information systems (GIS). The software and handbook are sold as a set. The platforms supported by MUSE are Hewlett-Packard, Macintosh, Silicon Graphics, SUN, and Windows. MUSE was developed by the U.S. Army Topographic Engineering Center (TEC) and the U. S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL).
